Answers To An Atheist's Mocking Questions About Heaven

The following [in blue] is a list of questions an atheist asked in a Facebook group. My answers [with minor additions] are below.

**copied from another group***

SOME FEW QUESTIONS ABOUT HEAVEN:

The following are questions I posted on a Christian forum. Instead of answers, I was blocked. I thought they'd take advantage of this to "win me to Christ?" Anyways.

1. Does heaven exist? If so, where's evidence?

2. According to the bible, heaven is described as streets of gold. Why is it decorated with gold? Is gold still valuable in heaven?

3. People (or faithful Christians) will be rewarded in heaven, according to the bible. But what are they going to do with those rewards? Since obviously, there's not going to be any needs in heaven?

4. Those who diēd as infants, are they going to grow up in heaven? Or they'll remain infants?

5. Are you going to chat with Jesus, Moses, Adam, Eve, etc? What kind of things will you be talking about?

6. Is thinking going to take place in heaven? Because we normally think about how to solve problems, how to use creative techniques, etc. But since there's no problems in heaven, then what exactly are Christians going to be thinking about?

7. If you get to heaven and discover someone you loved hasn't made it, will you miss them, or you'll be emotionally numb?

8. Can you be happy and joyful, even while other people are being tortūred simply because they didn't believe in the correct religious teachings? E.g. people who are born in India are most likely Hindu. And those in Saudi Arabia are mostly Muslim. Because religion is not discovered, it's inherited.

9. What are you going to be spending your time on in heaven? Praising God for eternity? Day and night? Is this something God enjoys?

10. Are people going to sleep in heaven, or their eyes will be open 24 hours for eternity?

11. Are people going to be learning in heaven? Will ignorance exist?

12. Satan was kicked out of heaven, according to the bible, his crime was a wrong thought. What guarantee do you have, that you'll not develop a wrong thought while in heaven, especially that you had many of them on earth?m he [[sic]]

My Answers Below:

//1. Does heaven exist? If so, where's evidence?//

Read books on Near Death Experiences like:

a.) Near-Death Experiences as Evidence for the Existence of God and Heaven: A Brief Introduction in Plain Language by Steve Miller

b.) Imagine Heaven: Near-Death Experiences, God's Promises & The Exhilarating Future that Awaits You by John Burke

//2. According to the bible, heaven is described as streets of gold. Why is it decorated with gold? Is gold still valuable in heaven?//

You have to understand that there's a difference between the conscious disembodied condition during the Intermediate State which may simulate physical reality, and the Eternal Kingdom of God on Earth [and heaven?] after the resurrection of the body. The description of gold streets could be figurative. Though possibly literal. Just because some streets are gold doesn't mean all are made of gold. Also, gold will have aesthetic value because of its beauty, but not the same financial value. There will be no lack in heaven, so the "economy" will be different.

Rev. 21:5-7 LSB
[5] And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He *said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.” [6] Then He said to me, “They are done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost. [7] He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son.

//3. People (or faithful Christians) will be rewarded in heaven, according to the bible. But what are they going to do with those rewards? Since obviously, there's not going to be any needs in heaven?//

Rewards come in different forms. From closeness in rank and nearness to God in the kingdom; to responsibilities in ruling cities, peoples and angels [Matt. 19:28; Luke 19:16-19; 22:30; 1 Cor. 6:3]; greater honor [Rom. 2:6-10]; etc.

Read these sermons:

1. The Weight of Glory by C.S. Lewis
https://www.doxaweb.com/assets/weight_of_glory.pdf
[Last link seems to be back again]

2. Heaven by Edward D. Griffin

https://gospelmeals.blogspot.com/2020/05/heaven-by-edward-d-griffin.html

3. When I Was A Child by Edward D. Griffin
//4. Those who diēd as infants, are they going to grow up in heaven? Or they'll remain infants?//

They will either slowly grow up in the afterlife, or be fully grow instantaneously [like Adam & Eve].

//5. Are you going to chat with Jesus, Moses, Adam, Eve, etc? What kind of things will you be talking about?//

Yes, we will have relationships and conversations with Jesus and the other redeemed people. Probably with angels too. Topics? Virtually everything. But sanctified conversations. Topics will include Redemptive History in the wide [civilizations] and narrow [individual]. The wonders of creation and New Creation. Old and New heavenly Music. Maybe even old and New novels.

//6. Is thinking going to take place in heaven? Because we normally think about how to solve problems, how to use creative techniques, etc. But since there's no problems in heaven, then what exactly are Christians going to be thinking about?//

There may be more scientific discoveries to be found in the New Creation. In physics, mathematics, philosophy. Read Griffin's sermon on "When I Was A Child" linked above.

//7. If you get to heaven and discover someone you loved hasn't made it, will you miss them, or you'll be emotionally numb? //

Your thinking will be so sanctified that in one sense you will be sad that any human made in God's image is in hell, but at the same time be fully convinced and satisfied that it's perfect justice. You'll be able to see that then, even if in this life it might not seem so.

//8. Can you be happy and joyful, even while other people are being tortūred simply because they didn't believe in the correct religious teachings? E.g. people who are born in India are most likely Hindu. And those in Saudi Arabia are mostly Muslim. Because religion is not discovered, it's inherited. //

That's a misrepresentation. They are in hell for their sins against God, themselves and others, not merely because they didn't believe the right things. God didn't have to provide salvation to anyone or send them the Gospel message to believe. God would have been within His just rights to withhold both atonement and the Gospel from them. And God does withhold the message from some.

//9. What are you going to be spending your time on in heaven? Praising God for eternity? Day and night? Is this something God enjoys? //

Read the sermons I linked to above.

//10. Are people going to sleep in heaven, or their eyes will be open 24 hours for eternity? //

They probably won't need to, but will likely be able to. Eating will probably not be necessary, but it will be part of the pleasures and rewards of heaven [Matt. 8:11; Luke 13:29; 22:18]. So why not also with sleep?

//11. Are people going to be learning in heaven? Will ignorance exist? //

Yes. See Griffin's sermons above.

Eph. 2:7 ESV
so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

1 Peter 1:12 ESV
[12] It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.

//12. Satan was kicked out of heaven, according to the bible, his crime was a wrong thought. What guarantee do you have, that you'll not develop a wrong thought while in heaven, especially that you had many of them on earth?m he//

Not merely wrong thoughts, but evil and rebellious thoughts and actions. The person of Satan [who wasn't named "Satan" at the time] attempted to overthrow God and usurp His position/throne. See Isa.
14 and Ezek. 28 which are chapters about human kings at the surface level of the text, but probably have a secondary meaning regarding Satan's rebellion and fall from his former high status among God's angels.

A Theological Evaluation of Near Death Experiences

Though I'm a Calvinist, I appreciate Lutheran theologian Jordan Cooper. He did a two part video on Near Death Experiences. The second is the one that deals with how we might interpret them theologically from a Christian perspective, and is the more important one. See also the link to Jason Engwer's blog on Cooper's videos and where he agrees and disagree HERE.

Critique of Non-Christian Idealist Afterlife

An Idealist facebook friend said he preferred the afterlife presented in this video titled, "Vistas of Infinity - The far Reaches of Consciousness". The video seemed to present a non-Christian idealist version of the afterlife.  Though, I might be incorrectly identifying the worldview.

The following is my quick reaction to the video that I posted back on facebook [with its limitations as a social media app]:

I watched that video. I understand you're an idealist of sorts. I'm open to the possibility of divine idealism, though I don't positively hold it.

Human nature has two opposing tendencies wanderlust and homesickness. On the one hand we long for new experiences/adventure/novelty, on the other hand for stability and predictability. Imagine you were continually and endlessly inundated with unpredictable experiences and sensations with no rest/sleep/respite like when someone trips on acid. It would be nightmarish. On the other hand, imagine sameness and monotony where you only experience the same thing eternally. That would be maddening [in this life we can barely endure eating the same meal for more than a week].

These tendencies line up with the age old philosophical problems of the one and the many, of unity and diversity, of rationality and irrationality, or determinism and indeterminism, or the pluralism and change/flux of Heraclitus, and the monism and stasis of Parmenides/Zeno. I agree with Christian and Calvinist philosopher Cornelius Van Til that these problems are resolved in the Christian God who is both one and many [wherein neither unity and plurality is more ultimate than the other].

Given the afterlife proposed in the video, there's no guarantee that the anyone will resolve the mental/psychic/emotional conflict in the next life any better than in this. There's no guarantee that someone will help us out. Or that any "avatar" or "ascended master" is actually is telling us the truth about reality. He might be lying or sincerely wrong.

There may be no hope in ever coming to the truth about reality. Since there's no absolute omnipotent and omniscient personality as in theism to vouchsafe genuine knowledge or security. Since there wouldn't be a God who could protect people, the "higher intelligences" mentioned in the video could exploit them for their evil ends, or torment them out of pleasure and vindictiveness. In effect or in reality being tormented by real or practical "demons". [Note: Some suspect that the evil personalities people encounter in lucid dreaming are in fact demons, not merely manifestations of one's negative psyche].

Given the video's afterlife, you could never be certain you've hit bedrock reality. It's like the proverbial nightmare of trying to wake up in a dream, waking up, then realize you're still dreaming, and waking up from that dream and realizing again you're still dreaming ad infinitum. The nightmare would be self-perpetuatingly intensifying. There'd be no escape from such a nightmare.

Given that video, there's no guarantee of eschatological justice as in theism where there's a God who is knowledgeable enough (omniscient), wise enough (omnisapient), and powerful enough (omnipotent) to mete out justice. Given the video's afterlife, there would be no unifying principle that makes knowledge in life satisfactory. Part of the reason why some atheists hold to the error of scientism is that is satisfies that longing for knowledge, stability and unity. Theism provides that overarching unifying  principle by which reality can be judged and measured. It was the Christian conception of God that provided the grounding for the scientific revolution because it provided the foundation of our expectation of an ordered universe which reveals the working and rationally consistent mind of the absolute personality, God. Nor in such an afterlife as the video provides would there be a unifying principle of virtue and morality. Socrates' proposed the famous Euthyphro dilemma because he wanted to know the pious/holy/virtuous irrespective of what gods or men thought. Since, the finite gods could disagree. Ares could advocate for war and Aphrodite for love and they could disagree [or literally battle it out] for all eternity. In theism, the good, the true and the beautiful [that which many of the Greek philosophers sought] meet at the top. There is no dilemma where either there are absolutes outside of God, OR that God's will is so arbitrary that he can decree hatred to be a virtue. Some form of Divine Command Essentialism is true and God just IS the good/holy, the true and the glorious/beautiful, and He wants to share that with His creatures. [cf. R. C. Sproul's "The Soul's Quest for God: Satisfying the Hunger for Spiritual Communion with God"]

In theism, an unopposable omnipotent God controls all the flux in reality [Rev. 19:6], providing an environment for both the predictability and stability we long for out of our homesickness, as well as an environment of novelty to satisfy our wanderlust for newness and adventure [cf. C.S. Lewis' "The Last Battle" and his sermon "The Weight of Glory"]. Heaven will be ever new AND ever the same. Lewis talked about how the dimensions of heaven are fixed, yet "The further up and the further in you go, the bigger everything gets. The inside is larger than the outside."

Eph. 2:7

that in the AGES [plural] TO COME He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

1 Cor. 2:9

But as it is written: " Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him."

1 John 3:

1 Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.

2 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.

3 And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

Near Death Experiences and Christianity

Some links to resources that directly or indirectly deal with Near Death Experiences from a Christian
perspective. Sometimes the discussion is in the comments section rather than main body of a blog.

Non-Christians who believe in the genuineness of the NDE as indicating the reality of the persistence of consciousness after death and to an afterlife often argue that the NDE data disproves Christianity. As a Christian I have to ask the following: Does the data point away from Christianity? Or does the data merely not point toward Christianity? The latter is consistent with the truth of Christianity, while the former would seems to militate against the truth of Christianity. Even if some (or most) of the evidence points away from Christianity, that would not necessary disprove Christianity since what is actually going on in NDEs isn't clear. At the most, what the data does seems to clearly demonstrate is that human consciousness is not tied up with the human brain. And thus suggesting the reality of something like the concept of the soul or spirit of human beings.
